Better known for its winter sports, the Dolomites are an inspiring destination to visit between late spring and autumn too. Once the snow melts and skiers disperse, cyclists flock to the ‘Pale Mountains’ to ride through spectacular landscapes and breathe in the fresh, fragrant air of Northern Italy. Riding out from Alta Badia each morning, you will face winding ascents over high mountain passes before negotiating breath-taking descents into the valley below. It is by no means an easy place to bring your bike, however, there are very few places where you are rewarded with such majestic views and excellent local cuisine.
We recommend a morning flight. After arriving you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel in Alta Badia. The transfer will take about 2h30. You will have time to build your bike (or pick up your hire bike), take in the magnificent scenery of the area and grab a beer on the balcony.
Day 2: The Passo Pordoi
This 100km loop will test your legs. Taking in no less than six climbs, today will be a day on the bike you never forget. Starting up the Passo Campolongo as a warm-up, you then go on to the Passo Pordoi. No other climb captures the the essence of mountain riding in the Dolomites quite like the Passo Pordoi. The Passo Sella follows, which is then quicly followed by the Passo Gardena, back over the Passo Campolongo and your final big climb for the day is the Passo Falzarego.
Day 3: Passo Giau
Today's ride again takes you over 5 passes as you head out to ride the Passo Giau. Linking the valleys of Ampezzo and Livinallongo in the Dolomites, the Giau is considered to be the most beautiful mountain pass of the range that includes both the Fedaia and Pordoi. Peaking in a vast and beautiful mountain pasture at the foot of the Nuvolau Alto 2647-metre turret you can also see the summits of the Tofane, Monte Cristallo and the Sorapis. Even with its beauty don’t let the Giau fool you, it can also be a beast. Known for its harsh and relentless gradient, the Giau has a daunting 29 hairpin bends from the Selva di Cadore side and is over 10 km long, peaking at 2236m.
Day 4: Departure day
There is time to attempt the Passo Fedaia before we transfer you back to the airport . We recommend you get an afternoon or evening flight. If you want to extend this trip, this is possible.
