Short description
The Tiber valley runs from Mount Fumaiolo, on the Tuscan border with Emilia Romagna, through the Valtibertina and onwards through Umbria, to Rome and the Tirreno sea. On this tour, we show you the Upper Tiber valley as it wends from Sansepolcro, a town with rich artistic heritage, to Assisi, the home of St Francis, and onwards to the wine country of Montefalco. The cycling on this route features a lot of traffic-free cycle paths, which, coupled with the included e-bikes, makes this an excellent tour for those looking for an easy, stress-free ride through the beautiful Tuscan landscape.
The itinerary
Day 1 | Arrive at Perugia or Florence
Transfer to your first hotel in Sansepolcro and settle into your first hotel before your welcome meeting and bike fitting.
Day 2 | Optional Round Trip: Lago di Montedoglio | Distance: 24mi/39km
Sansepolcro is a town that begs to be explored, and we recommend doing just that after breakfast. The atmosphere is tangibly Tuscan and remains unspoiled by the tourist touch. After a coffee in the square, its time to get accustomed to your Raleigh e-bikes. We suggest an easy ride out to the photogenic landscape of Lagi di Montedoglio, the perfect spot for a mid-ride picnic.
Day 3 | Cycle Sansepulcro to Montone | Distance: 34mi/55km
Its time to move hotels and begin your journey south. The day starts by picking up the river Tiber and the purpose-built cycle path that runs alongside it, offering an easy ride southwards into Umbria and to the charming hilltop town of Montone. On the way, we suggest a visit to Citta di Castello, a great spot at around the halfway point of the ride for a break and some lunch and a strong Italian coffee, our favorite fuel for cycling! The destination for your ride is Montone, a small, picturesque hilltop town and one of Umbrias best kept secrets.
Day 4 | Cycle Montone to Assisi | Distance: 33mi/53km
Today starts with a long freewheeling descent, from Montones perched position back to the banks of the Tiber at the town of Umbertide. From here the route hugs the river all the way into Assisi, a spectacular town that announces its presence from a distance, with stunning views of the vast monastery of St Francis. Glide up to the town aboard your e-bike in time for a stroll before dinner.
Day 5 | Rest Day
There is simply too much to see, taste and learn about in Assisi to fit into a single day, so today we planned a rest day to help you make the most of this amazing spot. Watch as pilgrims wander by on St Francis Camino and soak up the latent spirituality of the place.
Day 6 | Cycle Assisi to Montefalco | Distance: 15mi/25km
Slip away from Assisi and the slopes of Monte Subassio and coast down into the valley once more. The route picks up the River Topino, a tributary to the Tiber and takes you along its banks into Bevagna. Bevagna, the best place to stop for a lunch break today, is an exception in this part of the world: a town built on the valley floor! Montefalco awaits just a little further down the road and a rich glass of red wine awaits.
Day 7 | Optional Round Trip: The Wine Loop | Distance: 9mi/15km
For those looking for one last ride aboard their excellent e-bike, we have a great little ride available for the final day that takes you riding through the glorious vineyards surrounding Montefalco. At less than 10 miles long, youll have plenty of time to stop and taste as you go along and plenty of room in your panniers to bring a bottle or two back with you.
Day 8 | Departure
After your final caff latte this morning, we say Arrivederci. Trip extensions available on request.
